Although medical education has been a part of several PAMS medical missions, members have requested that an effort be made to enhance PAMS medical education efforts in Peru.

An educational program has been put forward in collaboration with the Educations Committee that will provide members the opportunity to be part of a concentrated and continued effort to improve medical education in Peru.

Dr. Manuel Valdivieso has been exploring this possibility with Cayetano Heredia Medical School through its affiliation with the Red Peruana de Universidades.

The Red is a network of Peruvian universities that have agreed to work collaboratively to improve their educational mission. It includes Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, La Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Universidad Católica de Santa Maria, Universidad Católica de Trujillo, Universidad Nacional de Cajamarca, Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana, Universidad Nacional de Piura, Universidad Nacional de San Agustin de Arequipa, Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Universidad Nacional de San Cristóbal de Huamanga, Universidad Nacional de Trujillo and Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú.

After preliminary discussions, it was determined that a five-year pilot program will be started with the Universidad Nacional de Cajamarca. Unfortunately this site has not been able to respond to an outline of short and long-term objectives and the necessary budget to support this effort. Other universities are being considered. On the other hand, Cayetano Heredia has offered the opportunity to develop a virtual lecture program whereby presentations in Lima or in the US can be recorded and be available through CDs to medical schools in Peru. We hope that members interested in this project can participate.
